Being Your Kids Best Teacher
Some children come into the world with a seemingly vast amount of knowledge. While other kids may have a hard time keeping up. There are a number of factors that determine a child’s capacity for knowledge. However, parents can get a jump start on their child’s education. Being your child’s first and best teacher is your job.
Start Early
Being preoccupied with the worries of life is the typical adult state of mind. This can block the thought process and cause us to become forgetful. A child’s mind is wide open. Paying the bills, maintaining the house, and work performance is not one of their concerns. They need to start their education now.

A baby can’t decipher the difference between the ABC’s or a song with regular lyrics. Whenever you play with the baby, you should sing ABC’s and count to ten, or beyond. Hold up flash cards or paint letters and numbers around their bedroom. Then point to an “A” and say this is an “A”. Do this with letters and numbers, and then with whole words. Don’t be discouraged if your friends and family tease you. Neither you or your baby have anything to lose.
Other Topics to Consider
Once a child is in school, they will be learning about arithmetic, reading and writing, which is important for them. You should take this time to make sure they have a broad view on education. Even though they are years off from applying these procedures in the real world, teach them the rules of the road and how to handle money.
For example, whenever you purchase something with a credit card, explain to the child that these little pieces of plastic are a big responsibility and they should never buy what they can’t afford. Explain that all bills should be paid in full and on time. Although these lessons may seem to go in one ear and out the other, they won’t. These words are important. Once they start using money, they will have a better understanding of how to manage it.
Driving safety is also very important. Explaining these things young will help ensure that they have the proper knowledge and maturity when its time for them to begin driving. Merging is something to consider, when someone needs to be let in you should wave them in after you slow down. When this happens let the child know that that driver is considered courteous. Let them know that being courteous is the best way to control your vehicle, and it’s not a weakness.
There will be more lesson examples that will arise throughout their development. Everything from grandma’s recipes to playing sports will arise. You will also have to talk about sex, drugs, and alcohol. This is best brought up in a conversation, rather than making it feel like a lesson. Spend time talking with your kids and they will listen to you.
